The winged victory of Samothrace

In an article by Lori McNee, who wrote, "Art has been said to be ‘an expression of both hope and despair’, which embodies all facets of the human condition," so to is the purpose of great literature. McNee also stated, "The awe inspiring cathedrals of Europe rose from the ashes of plague, cruelty and despair. After which, the forward thinking artists of the Renaissance era emerged in times of religious persecution and political chaos…" How true this is. It is a subject not lost to the authors of the Renaissance, such as Chaucer, then following the Renaissance, came Shakespeare (1564 – 1616), who enhanced literature in such a way, his plays are still be performed today. Then came Then Sir Walter Scott of 1771-1832, who wrote ‘Lady of the Lake,’ followed by Kipling, Milton, Dryden, Lawrence and the Bronte sisters.
